The Christmas Chronicles

'Tis the season! 🎄

Christmas is just around the corner, so we have already started working on some vocabulary and some listening and speaking activities related to this beloved festivity.

We are going to watch the film The Christmas Chronicles on Netflix in the language workshop in 1st ESO to work on some Christmas vocabulary and our listening skills but, before that, I asked students to make a checklist with Christmas words that they already know or had looked up in the dictionary.

After reviewing their checklists and adding some new words brainstorming in common too, students were asked to watch the trailer of the film we were going to watch and answer some questions on Edpuzzle. These questions were related to the same trailer images, Christmas vocabulary and predictions about the plot of the film.

The next step was watching the film, which students are enjoying a lot! (we haven't finished yet). The film has lots of impressive action scenes mixed with some funny moments as well. Just at the first 20 minutes of the film, students could tick many of the Christmas words in their lists as they listened to them.

When we finish watching the film we will go back to the quiz on Edpuzzle to check their answers and predictions.

Here's the Edpuzzle video in case you want to use it as well:

I think using it as a pre-watching activity has been a good idea since it worked well as a teaser (students were more eager to watch the film afterwards) and it also helped them remember some of the Christmas vocabulary they were asked to tick on their lists later on.

Share your opinion about the film if you watched it or are planning to do so! 🎅

  1. I liked the use of Time toast to create timelines about the greatest conquerors in history as a final task to review all the content the students had learned in that unit regarding grammar, vocabulary and reading.
One of the things I couldn´t reflect on was the Edpuzzle activity since I didn´t have access to the video. Even though, I don´t see the point in using a video as part of another video activity which was watching the film in itself. In my opinion, the teacher could have used Edpuzzle as an additional activity for reading, writing o even grammar. However, it seemed it worked out very well and her students really enjoyed it which is what finally matters: having motivated students who engaged in their learning process.
Thanks Cristina for sharing your blog with us!

  2. Hi Cristina!!

First of all: Congratulations!! I really love your blog!! The design is very attractive and clear so surfing on the different posts is quite easy!!
I really like the idea of using the trailer of the film just right before watching it through the platform EDPUZZLE, I think it can really foster students eagerness to watch it! As well, it will prepare them (as far as vocabulary and comprehension are concerned) when watching the whole movie.

I did something similar but with the movie "The Grinch" but I also included an additional task (I guess you also did it but you didn't mention in here since your focus is on how you used Edpuzzle). Apart from watching the movie, students recorded themselves in a video and they had to create their own "Comprehension video about the Grinch", here they used Edpuzzle again and they asked other students questions about the movie we had just watched. It was a quite good experience since they practised all the vocabulary learnt throughout the movie and also their speaking and writing skills when doing their videos. Finally, I assigned each student another mate to go into their Edpuzzle video and answer the questions they previously set (in this way they also practised reading). It was a fun activity they all liked!!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR AMAZING JOB!!
